5 things you need to create great content

What to do before you start creating content

Whether you’re thinking of starting a blog, setting up a newsletter or adding content pages to your website, there are a few things you need to do first if you want your content to be effective and relevant.

1. Know your audience

It seems obvious but it’s so important, it’s worth mentioning again and again. Before you write anything, you need to know who you’re writing for. If you’re a retailer, who buys your products? Who are the influencers that recommend your products to the buyers? Gender, age range, profession, marital status, income group, beliefs, habits… The more specific, the better.

2. Define your tone of voice

Once you know who you’re talking to, you can define your brand’s personality. A detailed tone of voice will allow you to remain consistent throughout your different channels of communication. If your brand was a person, what kind of person would it be? How would he or she talk? Are you going to be authoritative, like a teacher, or funny and light-hearted, like a friend? Are there some words or phrases you prefer to use and some you’d rather not?

3. Create a content calendar

If you decide to create a blog, start a newsletter or post some content on social media, you need to plan your content in advance. You can’t just decide one day to start writing a blog post and see where it leads you, a blog is a commitment. How often do you want to post? What will your newsletter be about in three months from now? What are the upcoming events you want to talk about and when?

4. See the big picture

Consistency is key. Your content strategy must take into account all your different channels of communication. Use your newsletter to advertise your new blog post or a new competition you’re launching on social media. In order to increase your customer engagement, all the content you produce and publish has to be consistent and every post, email or article should be part of a big picture.

5. Think SEO

When creating a blog or content pages for your brand, you might be tempted to let your creativity go wild and write about anything as long as you feel inspired. I’m gonna stop you right now. If brands invest in content marketing it’s because it helps them be seen on the internet by potential customers they want to convert into active clients. You need to make sure your content is optimised for search engines, so your pages or articles come up when people are searching for specific keywords.
